Sesame Balls: Chinese New Year's Favourite With A Peanut Butter Twist

3

Category : ,

Lunar New Year is widely celebrated across Asia. To celebrate this upcoming Chinese New Year, I made some traditional New Year’s treats, sesame balls. These deep-fried sweet puffs of dough coated in sesame seeds are very popular in dim sum restaurants, but at New Year’s they take on special meaning. Chinese believe if you eat sesame balls, your fortunes will expand like the dough expands when it fries. The treat's round shape and golden color are also considered lucky.

I remember when I was a little girl my grandma would make a big patch of Sesame Balls for everyone on Chinese New Year morning. They were the best Sesame balls ever! They were puffy, crispy and chewy at the same time. Sesame balls are traditionally filled with red bean paste or lotus seeds, but I have replaced it with peanut butter and jam in some of my sesame seed balls, turning them into a doughnut-like dessert.

Best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year! If you have not eaten this before, I encourage you to try it as it is really delicious!

Serves: 4
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Estimated Cost: $5
Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup white sesame seeds
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 1/2 cups glutinous rice flour
  • 1/2 cup red bean paste (may not all be used)
Preparation
1. In a wok or deep-sided, heavy saucepan, pre-heat the oil for deep-frying to 350 degrees F. Make sure that there is at least 3 inches of oil in the wok. Spread the sesame seeds over a piece of wax or parchment paper. Place a small bowl of water beside the sesame seeds.

2. Dissolve the brown sugar in 1 cup of the boiling water.

3. Place the glutinous rice flour in a large bowl. Stir in sugar mixture until you have a sticky dough.

4. Flatten to a disk with palm of your hands and thin out the edges to form a pancake. Place the
filling in the center and fold edges together and seal it by rolling in the palm your hands.

5. Dip the balls into the small bowl of water before rolling the ball over the sesame seeds.
Repeat the process for each ball.

6. Deep fry sesame balls in medium hot oil for a few minutes until golden brown, be careful not to overcook.
7.Drain the deep-fried sesame seed balls on paper towels. Serve warm or cold.
Husband Says:"More please. Never had these with peanut butter before, only red bean paste. And I have to say, the new combo is delish. Could be tasty for breakfast as well."

OMGosh! These are my favorite things when we go out for Dim Sum. Thank you so much for the recipe!!!

I love these sesame balls! I'm so glad you've found my blog and thanks for following. I'm now a follower as well!

Carmen, thanks for dropping by & for your kind words.
Glad to reach your blog too!

Surprisingly we have similar sesame balls in Indian cuisine too, especially made during a festival that comes in January. But in our case I think they're not fried. It's quite a similarity, otherwise :)
